Thought this might be of interest to some of you. My friends at Radio for
Peace International in Costa Rica (where I used to work) asked me to pass
along the following info on two new programs they are initiating: a ten week
immersion course on-site in Costa Rica on Peace Journalism with Spanish/
English language training; and a traveling, two-day interactive workshop on
the far right-wing's use of the media to convey messages of hate and incite
violence.
They are hoping to promote these projects internationally, so any help any of
you could offer in spreading the word and publicizing this to all interested
parties would be greatly appreciated. In particular, for those of you who
happen to have university contacts, please post and forward this information
in and to appropriate departments (esp. media/communications, journalism,
peace studies, political science, Latin American studies and career
services/internships) and amongst your students.

in Media Ten Week Immersion Course on Peace Journalism with Language
Training: The Institute of Progressive Communications
1. History
* Radio For Peace International is a peace related broadcast facility
currently broadcasting on shortwave and the internet 24 hours a day 7 days
a week to 120 countries worldwide with an estimated listenership of
800,000. It is also a teaching and training facility as well as the home
of the International Center for Human Rights in Media which is a research
and archival facility dedicated to monitoring, chronicling and publishing
information on and about intolerance and racism in media and the promotion
of tolerance.
* Fourteen years of experience has allowed us to utilize our staff of
broadcast educators to design educational programs which have served
learners internationally.
2. Concept
* Radio For Peace International and the International Center for Human
Rights in Media has developed a course which will serve 12-25 learners from
all over the world per 10 week program. These students will live and study
in Costa Rica under the direction and supervision of Radio For Peace
International and the International Center for Human Rights in Media.
3. Content
* Learners will attend daily classes on peace related studies including
social justice and human rights, ethics in journalism, the history of
racism and xenophobia in media, researching and documenting intolerance in
media, the research and writing of papers and articles for publication,
production of radio programs based on the research
* Spanish language training
* Cultural immersion and community involvement
4. Delivery
* Each learner will be assigned a host family in Costa Rica and will live
in the family home
* This is an outcome based program utilizing experiential learning
techniques in a multi-cultural team based learning environment
* Classes will be held in the facilities of Radio For Peace International
and the International Center for Human Rights in Media
* Classes will be held in the student's language plus English and Spanish
* Overnight fields trips to experience the biodiversity of Costa Rica will
be provided every other weekend
5. Cost
Based on a minimum of 12 students per 10 week session, the cost per student
including all classes, materials, food, lodging, laundry, transportation, 4
overnight field trips, and special events including a welcoming party and
graduation ceremony is: $3850.00 per learner.

As you know we are working hard here at Radio For Peace International
to become self-sustaining by implementing our new 10 week educational
program. In addition to the educational program, James and I have
developed a two-day workshop based on the workshop we presented at
the World Conference Against Racism which we intend to present at
colleges and universities around the world. Enclosed is a
description of the workshop and again, we would like to ask your help
in getting the information out to the appropriate colleges and
universities so we can develop bookings.
The workshop is one of the first outreaches of our new center, the
International Center for Human Rights in Media and presents timely
topical information that people need to hear. Virtually everyone
that attended our workshop in Durban, and people I talked to while
traveling tell me that they knew nothing about the far-right hate
broadcasting on shortwave and the internet. We see a tremendous
increase in hate groups internationally and again, we feel we have an
outreach program that will help people while providing needed
financial support to RFPI.

Presents a two-day interactive workshop
How extremist groups use the media and internet
to convey their messages of hate and incite violence
In today's complex world, with so much emphasis being placed on
technology and the internet, many students don't realize how
pervasive the Nazi, skinhead, white supremacist and other extreme
hate groups are. Over the last decade the International Center for
Human Rights in Media and their affiliate Radio For Peace
International have become the world's foremost authority in
chronicling, archiving and exposing these groups by monitoring their
activities on their medium of choice, shortwave radio.
The following quotes were taken from broadcasts on licensed US radio stations:
"Does the community where you live tend to be getting darker and
darker? Are you looking for an evening of entertainment with your
friends and family? Well folks, this is the answer to your prayers.
The one and only PNL - Portable Nigger Lyncher. Complete with two
ropes and custom hand-tied nooses. So, whether you're lynching a
skinny or fat nigger buck, a fat-ass nigger whore, or even two
niggers at a time, you can be assured this quality device will work
properly every time. To get your PNL dial toll-free 1-800 HANG EM
HIGH. The Portable Nigger Lyncher - for a whiter, brighter America."
"Let's set the record straight out there. The Jews are satanic.
They are Satan. As it says in Johnny 44, they are the children of
Satan, the devil. The works of their father they do. They are
liars, thieves and murderers. It's our captured government that's
doing this - our Jew government. It's the Jew government of the
Jew-nited States."
In fact, these statements were broadcast into your community.
Shortwave radio or world band radio is utilized by many extremist
groups to proliferate their messages to like-minded people because it
reaches over vast distances. Over the last ten years the
broadcasting of extreme hate on shortwave radio has increased from 20
hours per month to over 1100 hours per month. In addition, there are
more than 350 active internet web sites that specifically spread
hateful rhetoric.
James Latham, head researcher for the International Center for Human
Rights in Media and co-founder of Radio For Peace International,
along with workshop facilitator Gilbert Carmichael, will conduct the
two-day interactive workshop at your college, university or desired
location.
Workshop contents include:
* A history of intolerance in media and use of media today by
extremist groups
* Related techniques and psychology
* Legal issues
* A history of the organized hate groups
- in depth look at what they really believe
- who their leaders are
- how they operate
- how they interact with one another
* The power of disseminating hate on radio including concrete
examples of violence perpetrated as a direct result of hatred
incited using radio
* Interactive participation using the internet and recorded
material from actual broadcasts, as well as role playing
* Documenting and monitoring inflammatory programming: what you can do
This workshop was presented at the World Conference Against Racism
NGO Forum in Durban, South Africa in August 2001 and is updated on a
regular basis.
Workshop Details:
The services of James Latham and Gilbert Carmichael will be provided
on site for two days. Workshop sessions will be held both days 9:00
am-noon (with a 15 minute break) and 1:00 pm-4:00 pm (with a 15
minute break) and Mr. Latham and Mr. Carmichael will participate in
one evening activity (for example, they can give a lecture, attend a
dinner, be part of a panel discussion, be interviewed for college
radio or newspaper). Promotion of the workshop and related event is
the sole responsibility of the host institution.
Workshop Requirements and Restrictions: Workshops are limited to a
maximum of 35 students per two-day session. Connection to the
internet in the workshop space is desirable.
Workshop Costs:
A $3500 honorarium plus two economy class round trip airline tickets
to workshop location, food and lodging are required for each two-day
workshop. The honorarium goes to support the work of the
International Center for Human Rights in Media and Radio For Peace
International.
