hi all,
there are three good alternatives to active imho, and nothing is decided
at all. i do a little intro below but list only the ones which i think
support categorisation properly. for more alternatives check
http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Devel/WebHome
personally i think there are three main aspects to consider when
looking at a new codebase:
- are categories possible? if yes, is it possible to have not
only 'regional' themes/wires/categories but as well 'content' ones?
- is there an easy *non-techie* way to administer the site?
- can the existing content of imcuk (47237 database entries) be
converted into the new site?
sf-active: php and mysql database
------------------------------------------------------------------------
is capable of handling categories. that can be seen for regionalisation
when you have a look at italy imc. still, italy runs on *modified*
sf-active and we'd need to get hold of blicero who tweaked it and i've
seen no documentation on this yet. any such project would still need to
solve the question how to convert the existing uk database into the new
system. gpl'ed (free software). running on
http://sf.indymedia.org/ (IMC San Francisco)
http://italy.indymedia.org/ (IMC Italy)
intro documentation on http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Devel/ActiveSf
dada: php and mysql database
------------------------------------------------------------------------
is capable of handling regionalised wires with categories, users can
designate 'sections' and 'categories'. it's a highly stable and clean
codebase as it was developed by a single person. but this strength might
be as well a weakness: there are no people around who know it well. how
to convert the existing uk database into the new system is unanswered
but baltimore have done it so we'd need to get into contact with them.
is gpl'ed since 2 months (free software). running on
http://baltimore.indymedia.org/ (IMC Baltimore)
intro documentation on http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Devel/DadaImc
mir: java and JDBC database
------------------------------------------------------------------------
is capable of handling regionalised wires with categories which can be
added through a web interface. all content admin interfaces web-based.
supports different languages. conversion of the existing uk database
into the new system is well on it's way. gpl'ed (free software).
jeff and zapata have set up a mir test server and have already imported
existing data from imc-uk (the media is still missing). check it out at
