Feedback from groups:

 1. all to subscribe to the network list to keep in
touch.

A contact point to clean the newswire.

Find to find a way to share the workload. Nice to
have a tour of screening, discussions… the European
newsreal project will be launched on media democracy
day, that’s a useful tool to use locally.

 Imcs set up?
Groups thinking about it will go to a subsection in
the currently existing site.

Serious proposal to take on by groups: a week a
group, as a guideline.

People with just one session maybe it is too hard to
take it for a week…

Groups need to go back to their ‘base’ and debate it.

Explanation: for newswire and central column,
features list is the place:
imc-uk-features@indymedia.org. (see contact page)

Process list is for proposals to be ‘processed’ and
decided about. A way to keep formality and
transparency.

People with problems, not comfortable with updating
the central column: just send an email to features and
some one with the confidence will do it, that’s the
aim of the features lists.

There is also a page for people to post their details
and volunteer, it could be regionalised too.

It is very easy to set up an indymedia list, that
gives your group is easily findable and groups can
find eachother easily.
Who creates the lists? You email this lists:
listwork@lists.indymedia.org, saying we’re from
Manchester, we want a list, please give us a list.

These emails that we passed will be posted in lists.

The rotas for newswire cleaning will be dealt with in
features list.

 2. tools for website.

3 areas: practicalities, how to encourage people,
outreach, using grammar to do this…

writing effective media stories is more important
than presentation, for understanding.

Outreach: need to encourage campaigns to contribute.
We are responsible to find video format, other format
that have to do with news stories.

Also how to get software & machinery for free if
possible so that people can produce reports (videos,
software…) this forces to set up relationships between
indymedia and local communities.

Links with local groups who are producing media
within communities.

Make yourselves available to your community with your
skill and share them, do workshops etc. through, e.g.,
screening with food and music. And from that, using
drama, an underused genre, we tend to be some dry.

For proper journalism through indymedia, we can
facilitate that you have a journalism ‘pass’. NUJ
card: better in group, and need to go to a procedure,
it’s £50 a year, it’s a temporary membership of the
freelance ‘branch’. It’s a defensive tool when you
report demonstrations, it helps you out of trouble
once you’re in, and also in certain conferences.

Twiki can be useful – but we are not getting into
that because of time constraint.

Media democracy day: started in Canada last year. The
idea is to create a platform to highlight media
issues: concentration of ownership, censorship… and
more importantly, promote the work of independent and
radical media. A part of it has to do with
legislation.

This year is a bit wider. It’s on 16th of October.
The will be screening in UK, in some cities… in London
we’re doing a couple of events, including a
‘respectable’ event that could go well with NGOs,
guerrilla screenings, block of some newspaper, waiting
for police and trying to interview them and
interviewing the journos that try to interview us…

Also a forum for discussions. The important thing
this year is to network our groups better.

In Europe, they are doing features in indymedia
sites, there will be some events in some cities. Web:
www.mediademocracyday.org.

Next year in Geneva will be a world summit on
information society. They will do things like
copyright detection…

Normally companies get represented in the UN summits
by their official association, for this one companies
will be there directly.

In Switzerland, there will be next weekend a
European-wide indymedia meeting, good place to get
another perspective of people involved in this in
other parts of Europe. There is a list for this too.

Beyond tv will do screenings next weekend. Also a
spoof newspaper will be produced shortly, about the
media, capitalism… aimed at broad public not just
activists: if you would like to contribute, please
e-mail this address: tacticalarts@Yahoo.Co.uk.

Videonetwork.org do screenings, looking for films and
footage.

Beyond tv is a website, beyondtv.org.

One aim of a gathering like this, would be for media
groups looking for volunteers, would be possible to
get a database of volunteers and also of campaign
groups.

Proposal for the middle of October as a date for
group to commit to maintain the site, and set up a
group-rota. Until then, we would continue with the
rota as it is now – individual-based, daily.

Need to look at infrastructure, software etc. to use
the site in the future (mir, active…)

Migration to MIR? We should discuss in process list.
Although we need to start this process a forum like
this. The documentation on mir will be posted on lists
so that the collective have a look at it. Although the
existing documentation is quite dry.

Proposal: a group of people are empowered to start
looking into migration to MIR. The proposal is
accepted by consensus.
Passwords: people interested in having their own
section, or updating some that are already up there
(eg world, major reports) need an additional password
to access the server directly. This will be given out
to those interested.

Mobile phones and taking pictures: need a policy for
these meetings? No just ask before every picture.

Statesmen magazine gave the advocacy award to imc uk
this year, and in online communities. This summer
other imcs (eg in germany) have had awards too.
