[New-imc] CANCUN - internal new-imc DEADLINE 10:00 GMT Sunday 10 Aug 2003

Hi everyone,

I support the proposal to set up a temporary cancun.indymedia.org 
domain.  I'm excited to hear that wonderful Indymedia organizing is going 
on there, and I think we should do all we can to support it, as long as 
this is a very conscious temporary domain.  Susanna makes good points about 
doing our best to coordinate coverage.  I'm sure the collective organizing 
for indymedia coverage in Cancun has thought of the best way to do that, 
based upon lessons learned in previous IMC experiences like the G8, and if 
not, now would be a good time to start. :))

I don't know any of the techie aspects, but I imagine there should be some 
way to allow people to keep their links viable, but to also assure that 
when people put "cancun.indymedia.org" into their web browser, they'll be 
directed to page that explains that the site is no longer active and that 
directs them to mexico.indymedia.org, chiapas.indymedia.org and other 
indymedia WTO-related sites.  In other words, there must be a way to make 
sure articles posted during the convergence don't disappear, but to also 
make it clear that this was an event-oriented, temporary site.

One final thought.  I think we should pass the proposal, but perhaps 
consider an addendum to allow the site to stay active for a few days after 
the convergence.  This could be helpful if there are any arrests, thereby 
allowing people to keep up with events easily, and/or any lingering issues 
raised by the conference.  Plus, a lot of good media will be made over the 
days of the convergence and I think people should be able to access it all 
in one place for at least a few days after the events end there.
