[ahimsa-tech] last night's downtime

I just got off the phone with FRII, ahimsa's upstream ISP.
This was the planned outage I emailed to the list on October 30th. I believe
some of the reason they even /need/ to upgrade the thing is the IMC traffic volume.
They have two core routers. The colocates are only on one, for some reason.
They are replacing a cisco box with a juniper box. When they got the juniper up
& running it was having problems and they finally realized it had a bad card in
it. So they swapped the cisco back in. So the upgrade didn't happen and this is
why it was down for longer than they planned and why they have to do it /again/
next week.
I emphasized the suck of the downtime. They completely understand and are going
to figure out a better way...such as making sure the co-locates can fail over
between routers automatically (?).
We've been flatlining the router at around 70Mbps frequently in the last week.
I put off announcing a BLAG release because I knew that would completely
clobber it. I have started along the path of getting us a 1Gbps connection
since we're closing in on the ethernet theoretical max. There is already a
1Gbps card in the router (i figured we may need it someday when i built the
router). I'm pretty nervous about changing the default route of the thing when
i am so far from it...so this will likely not happen for awhile.
I got a few inquiries about the downtime, of course. One reason is that people
aren't on the ahimsa-tech list. Should we just merge this list into imc-tech?
That would increase the noise there a bit, but perhaps it's best.
One of the other reasons is that there are no other mirrors of sites such as
GLOBAL(!). There were in the past, but they have eventually disappeared. There
has been public rsync available for who-knows-how-long. Please mirror this
stuff. :) Unfortunately I doubt it'll happen because I've been saying that for
a few years now. :(

On a completely separate note, I am getting incredibly sick of the troll:
<gdm> Alster: and then he'll probably blame it on me
No gdm, I actually explain what's going on...unlike the shit that you have
failed to maintain.
gdm has been pissing me off like no one else since arc. The latter, you may
recall, was the one that managed through process to make indymedia's IRC so
unreliable for so long. When he finally left, IRC became solid and usable
again. gdm is quite damaging to uk-tech too:

If I ever quit doing this, it'll be due to the trolls. Someone please convince
gdm to just go away...
