Some things to investigate that would help in general with quite a few
sites not just yours :

caching : what caching options are available for drupal in particular
(most all of the sites that end up using quite a bit of db are drupal
sites on the server)

mod_gzip

can you run drupal thru a proxy such as squid to cache?

can you have anonymous views with a different caching than folk logged
in? (means you can really cache the anon, but not the logged in that are
adding/editing content)

that'll give you some fun, also if you find a standard kinda system, we
could script it for all drupal setups for instance ...
