yes, well, I was thinking local rather than global. I think virtual
global organising is good, but I think also being able to be on the
streets in support of comrades in the industries is a good thing too,
and be solidly open to workers at all levels in the industry. I think
having a more local focus, with affiliation with a global network, a lot
better way to start out without crawling thru what others have already
done.
I am strong of the opinion we shouldn't double up, and if you're
interested in a world-wide representation of where I think we should
head with a 'union' of tech/geek workers, look at IU560
(http://www.iww.org/unions/dept500/iu560/), you can subscribe to their
list at iu560-l-request at iww.org with the word subscribe in the subject.
I am keen however to get a lot of _local_ geeks and workers organised on
our 'island', so that we can have a local affiliated group of
techs/geeks working af filiated with the ASF/IWW for mutual aid. I would
like to see others do the same in their area of the world, without us
trying to encompass the lot. I think iu560 does that. I think also that
we work thru the local chapters that are in existence in Ausfailure
today, with a rich history. We for instance have a fella from Benalla
that comes in and helps out, he has worked help-desk and phones etc in
an ISP, and would be very interested in a union such as this, focussed
on mechanics of stuff relevant to him. A global virtual list is good in
one way, but I don't see it appealing to a local level worker in the
industry, as much as something more focussed to our struggles locally.
I think we should actively encourage other regional groups to do the
same, affiliated with us here in Australia. Yes axxs.org is
trans-global, but that does not mean we cannot start at local chapters,
working together using an existing (and strong) structure such as the
ASF/IWW etc.
Why re-invent the wheel? exactly. I think there is structure and a great
ideology that sums up where I was going with the proposal more fully
than my first take on it, and regardless of whether members of the
collective wish to join a 'workers union', I would like to still propose
that we support one.
Haing an open list, folk wouldn't necessarily have to join the IWW, but
by golly I reckon it would be a great way of jumping a LOT of headaches
and effort to work together, rather than separately. it is basically the
same ideology.
We have iww.org.au on the server, I have cc'd them as well as the ASF so
that they may care to have some input on this.
I would like to see this move ahead, and strongly. The more minds on
this idea the better.
So, a list for organising and discussing this, is my proposal, whatever
the name, whether others in the collective wish to be involved actively
or not, I think a list for discussing and promoting this idea would be
great.
