OK more info as I look into this, I think we should look at affiliation
with the ASF for these reasons;
1. The ASF is the Australian section of the IWA, which has a far greater
geographical spread. The IWW is virtually non-existent outside of the
anglo countries (despite its aspiration to be 'of the world').
2. the IWA is a federation of sections in individual countries. The
sections themselves are federations. The IWW is a general membership
organisation with its General Executive Board based in the US.
3. the IWA doesn't have the ambivalent attitude to anarchism that the
IWW has. There is a history to this going back to the '60s in America.
4. Whilst one joins the IWW as an individual, one joins the local
affiliate of the relevant IWA section. In this regard the ASF (which is
affiliated to the IWA through the process of federation) is a federation
of local affiliates. This is relevant to the particular process of
decision-making of the respective organisations. The ultimate decision
making body of the IWA is the IWA Congress where each section has equal
decision-making status (same for the ASF) whereas those elected to the
IWW General Executive Board are elected by votes from each individual
member of the IWW. This is why the IWW GEB is always made up of
americans as they comprise 90% of the membership.
