[axxs-sysadmin] wrong time on axxs.org - ntpdate?

i turned off ntpd and put in a cron.daily job to run ntpdate
instead. i didn't touch the timezone, which remains UTC-6.

You can test this with e.g.

TZ=GMT LC_ALL=C date             # UTC

TZ=America/Merida LC_ALL=C date  # UTC-6

Most sites should already use locale info to correct from UTC-6 to UTC
or whatever the preferred TZ is.

i tried the plesk interface "network server" checkbox, but it failed
(probably because the ntpd was running - no idea if that was plesk's
"fault" or not). Then i tried the "reset system time" checkbox, but it
didn't interact with the network server option, and instead got
horribly confused and made a big offset in time (many hours earlier
than the correct time). i corrected it within a few minutes. So a
small number of timestamps may be badly wrong by many hours. Sorry
about that. /me blames plesk.

The ntpdate script should now start up at boot

rc3.d/S59ntpdate -> ../init.d/ntpdate

and once a day by cron and the ntpd script has been turned off by
hand with "exit 0" in the script.

IMHO this ought to work and be stable.
