hi axxs-sysadmin,  (cc: imc-pl-torun)

PROPOSAL: This is a proposal for the going-through-new-imc-process IMC Torun
to be hosted on one of the axxs community servers - initial hostname
would be torun.axxs.org pending completion of the new-imc process.

SIDE-PROPOSAL: i'm suggesting to also open a samizdat demo site:
  samizdat.axxs.org
since there's almost negligible extra effort to add a new site to
an existing samizdat installation (a samizdat site config file, an apache
config, and an extra two lines in the main samizdat config file,
are sufficient). This would be for people on imc-cms and imc-alternatives
to get a feel for samizdat.

THE NITTY-GRITTY:
You can see the first part of our contact with new-imc here - we're
just waiting to make some language corrections before sending it to the
new-imc group - skip the polish, most sections have an english translation:
https://docs.indymedia.org/view/Local/ImcTorunNewImcKrok3

If you don't know much about Torun, it's a city in Poland where a
revolutionary who claimed that the Earth revolves around the Sun was
born half a millenium ago. More details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torun

Software requirements:

* samizdat CMS:
http://savannah.nongnu.org/download/samizdat/samizdat-0.6.0.tar.gz

Yes, it really is only 165kb! that's not a typo (mir-1.1 is 6.1M,
drupal-4.7.4 is 480k) - so for anyone wishing to understand how an
indymedia CMS can be so tiny but still be clear, easy to understand
and have most of the basic indymedia type features, feel free to have
a look once it's installed or play around with it yourself. Anyway...

* apache
* postgresql
* ruby

Standard versions from debian stable are sufficient, and for redhat i
assume that either rpm's or installation for source should not be difficult
for postgresql and/or ruby.

Hardware loads:

* diskspace - so far Torun articles/photos from the imc poland site
take up about 24Mb. Probably we'll continue to recommend video.indymedia.org
for videos, as well as doing gnash type stuff should be part of future
samizdat development.

* bandwidth + apache cpu load - hard to say. The population is about
200,000, about 0.5% of Poland's population, but since it's a town,
people are better internet connected than in the countryside, and
since there's an active human rights + animal rights activism
community here, we should probably expect more than 0.5% of the poland.
Suppose Torun would be about 10% of the whole imc poland load.

> 60-100 Gb/month =  2-3 Gb/day,  1.5-2 million hits/month

So Torun would be about 6-10Gb/month, 0.15-0.2 million hits/month
= 0.2-0.3Gb/day.

* postgresql/ruby cpu load - samizdat does not (at the moment) expect
to be separated into dynamic and static servers (though apparently this
could be done relatively easily), so there would be some extra cpu load
relative to a static site. Experience on existing samizdat servers suggests
that this would a relatively small load.

People:

boud at riseup net
crom666 at o2 pl (not yet frequent internet user)
angdraug at riseup net (busy - belarus makes howard look democratic)

Apart from me, we have another local guy, crom666, who at the moment
has weak internet access. angdraug from imc belarus is the main
author of samizdat - he's a debian developer :) - and is usually busy,
but if i got taken away by aliens and you heard nothing from crom666,
angdraug would probably be able to help if needed.

For anyone interested in the imc-cms process, here's the samizdat report:
http://techmeet.sarava.org/English/CMSSurveyReportSamizdat

i found samizdat quite easy to install on a test server, so i don't
see any obvious difficulties on axxs servers.
