Yep, zope doesn't care about apache, it just accepts incoming requests
and passes back a result. Whether it's a user connecting straight to the
port or apache, or squid, or anything ...

High traffic sites I run squid in front, apache -> squid -> zope out of
interest ... there's a product for plone called CacheFu, which has
scripts for patching squid with the ACL rights etc .. really easy
actually, it deploys everything, and you just have to add a snippet of
rewrite rules to the vhost.conf (apache.conf) if you want to get jazzy,
you can much around with Pound as well ...
