hi axxs-sysadmin,
PROPOSAL: Does anyone have any objections to properly installing the dummy
kernel package linux-image-2.6-amd64 ? This would give us a 2.6.18
kernel, updated automatically when someone does aptitude update &&
aptitude -d upgrade && aptitude upgrade.
kam and i have been discussing this on #axxs a bit.
DETAILS:
On borg, in aptitude at the moment we have
The following packages have been kept back: linux-image-2.6-k7
This points to 2.6.18*-k7 versions of the kernel.
What is k7? See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Micro_Devices#K5.2C_K6.2C_Athlon_.28K7.29
What we actually have is:
cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor : 0
vendor_id : AuthenticAMD
cpu family : 15
model : 35
model name : AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athlon_64_X2
We are presently running:
uname -a
Linux borg.axxs.org 2.6.8-3-k7-smp #1 SMP Tue Dec 5 22:36:44 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux
IMHO it makes sense to use the kernel best matched to our system.
AFAIK 64-bit compatibility with legacy (old) 32-bit software should be
reasonably well done in etch, and our hardware is 64 bit anyway at the
moment, so my guess is this should improve performance a bit and not
create problems.
Anyway, there are plenty of other people here with debian experience.
Any comments? Objections?
