You've successfully included it in the debian package management system,
so it certainly seems to be ok in that sense.

However, if you go into aptitude and look for ffmpeg, i think you'll
find that the version you've installed is from August 2006 and that
the present version in debian stable (not installed) is from March
2007.

If you want something more recent than the etch version, but not
necessarily the most recent, hot off the press, then there could be a
more recent ffmpeg version backported to etch - search with "any"
distribution on the package distribution page on the debian.org site.

But presumably the way you did it should also make it possible to 
get a more recent version than August 2006.
