Dear Sofia Jarrin-Thomas,
Prevent Unjust and Discriminatory Firings
at New Bedford Hat Factory
Beginning January 15, 2008, a New Bedford hat manufacturer, Ahead Headgear has been threatening to fire nearly forty workers for discrepancies in documents. This is despite the fact that there has been no pressure on the company to fire these workers. Ahead Headgear has been hiring replacement workers and has been working to have them trained to do the jobs of the threatened workers. The current workers have given years to build this very successful company and deserve respect.
Send a letter to the following decision maker(s):
Mr. Ken Schwartz
Below is the sample letter:
Subject: Staffing at Ahead
Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],
I am a Massachusetts community member very concerned about the potentially discriminatory firing of workers at your factory, slated to begin tomorrow. I know of your request to workers on the social security no-match situation. According to governmental statistics a large amount of these discrepancies are due to clerical errors and data bases that are not kept up to date. Community members are concerned that Ahead Headgear's attempt to re-verify work authorization may be discriminatory in its outcome.
I ask that these unjust firings not begin and that you show respect to your dedicated employees.
Sincerely,
Sofia Jarrin-Thomas

What's At Stake:
The Problem:
Ahead Headgear employees have been required to report to management to recertify their Social Security numbers due to a mismatch of Social Security numbers in the employer's files and those at the Social Security Administration. According to governmental statistics a large amount of these discrepancies are due to clerical errors and data bases that are not kept up to date. Community members are concerned that Ahead Headgear's attempt to re-verify work authorization may be discriminatory in its outcome.
The Department of Homeland Security has proposed making recertification tougher and this proposal has been stayed by the Northern District of California Federal District Court. Currently the proposed regulation changes by DHS remain enjoined until the matter is fully litigated, or new regulations are promulgated that conform to the court's objections.
The Solution:
Ahead Headgear and Ken Schwartz should honor the work of your employees who have built your company. Drop the firings slated to begin on March 5, 2008.
Campaign Expiration Date:
April 2, 2008
