Return to No-Match Letter Policy a Thinly-Veiled Distraction
From Real Problems Facing All Americans

Forcing employers to fire millions of immigrant workers will inflict major blow to nation’s economy

Los Angeles, CA: The National Alliance of Latin American and Caribbean Communities (NALACC), the largest Latin
American immigrant-led organization in the U.S., denounced the Department of Homeland Security’s intent to return to
the so-called “no-match letters” policy that would require employers to fire millions of immigrant workers living in the U.S.
DHS will post the updated rule in the Federal Registry in the next few days for public comment and will begin mailing the
letters to thousands of employers in May of this year.

“Secretary Michael Chertoff’s intent to return to the flawed policy of forcing the firing of millions of immigrant workers
living in the U.S. who have generously contributed to the progress and well-being of this nation is a cynical distraction
from the real problems all Americans, U.S.-born as well as foreign-born, are facing right now,” said Oscar Chacón,
 NALACC Executive Director.

“Some of the problems Americans are facing include the lack of good-paying jobs with benefits, the inability of millions of
homeowners to make their mortgage loan payments, the rising costs in healthcare, education, fuel, and food staples, the
fiscal deficits at the local, state, and federal levels leading to reduction in social services, and the fiscal and death toll of
the war in Iraq and other fronts,” stated Mr. Chacón. “And yet, this Administration insists on blind enforcement of
obsolete, inhumane and dysfunctional immigration laws even if it means inflicting a major blow to our country’s already
 precarious economic situation,” he added.

NALACC calls for immigration reform that would enable the millions of working immigrants, who are helping U.S.
industries remain very profitable, and contributing their fair share to local, state, and federal tax coffers, to apply for legal
permanent residency status. This humane and practical solution will ensure their continued support to our nation’s
 progress and well-being.
