[Boston-editorial] new editor orientation meeting

Hello all --

At last night's web-editorial meeting, we agreed that it would be a
good idea to have an orientation for new editors, an idea that's been
tossed around on these lists but not been acted on yet. I have
volunteered to set up the meeting and provide orientation.

Sofia (the only new editor present at last night's meeting) said what
would work best for her would be to sit down in front of a computer
with me and get walked through the various aspects of editing the
website. I know not everyone learns the same way, so if anyone wants to
include other approaches to the orientation, please speak up.

In any case, what I am envisioning is not just an abstract discussion
of our editorial policy, but a practical look at how we actually
implement it, as well as the day-to-day tasks necessary to keep the
site up-to-date and from being taken over by trolls. I'm also hoping
this will empower the new editors not just to be more active in editing
the site, but also in suggesting changes to editorial policy and
practice.

So what we need is a date and place to meet. If people could e-mail the
lists saying what dates and times work for them, that would help
immensely. We also need a place where we can all sit down in front of a
computer together. I would volunteer my apartment, but I suspect it's
really out of the way for most people (the end of the B line).

bread and roses,
Matt
