I think you took my comment the wrong way, Pete. (This goes back to
e-mail being bad way to communicate, because the tone doesn't come
across.) I wasn't saying we shouldn't have ties to the local anarchist
scene and shouldn't be concerned about them. If I thought we were doing
something to alienate them, I would be worried. May be all the local
anarchists aren't posting to our site, but a lot of them pretty clearly
do. They certainly seem to be one of the most vocal groups. I think
they also have other ways of communicating they rely on (I think I've
seen something about a local anarchist list-serve). Is that what
concerns you? May be when we get up bulletin boards, they'll have more
conversations on our site--I would like to see more of that sort of
thing. I think the presentation you did at the anarchist summit is
good--I'm not knocking your work. It's not like I said I though that
featuring that article was inappropriate. Nor do I think the issue is
unimportant. I'm actually very interested in supporting movements of
indigenous people and peasants--they're the cutting edge of the global
justice movement in many ways. I think it's good that there are folks
in the US doing support work for them. My point (which I guess I should
have made more clearly) simply was that there are communities we have
much weaker ties with and I'd like to focus on building those ties--as
we talked about last meeting. We should build on the base we already
have (which includes the anarchist scene) and expand from there--I'm
not saying we need to abandon them. It would foolish to try to cut our
ties with our established base. But if we're going to put energy into
outreach, it seems to me that we should put into it those areas where
we are weakest. -- Matt
