[IMC-Boston-Editorial] today's troll

This happens on a regulas basis. Mostly, the repeat messages are purged from the system (at least that's what I did when I was an editor) so there generally isn't such a long trail of evidence that demonstrates how very much these individuals try to clutter the site.

Just because we don't track IP's now doesn't mean we can't change our policy for the future. One thing we could do, tho I would have to check with Rob and Jon to see if it's possible, is to track the IP's on a daily basis and purge the record at the end of each day. That way we won't have any permanent record of who has visited our site at the same time that we will have the ability to track specific troublemakers on a daily basis to stop them from spamming the site. I for one am pretty adamant about NOT tracking IP's, but if there is a way for us to specifically block posts, but not hold a permanent record of it, I would be very interested in learning more about it.

Jon, Rob, you out there? How difficult would it be for us to setup an IP tracking system that purges at the end of each day? Or one that can have a select few IP's entered into it but that will be able to purge on an hourly basis? Maybe one that ONLY checks against a select few IP's but doesn't actually track once it's verified the source is not from a specific location? Does that make any sense to either of you?

Anyways, sometimes the troll's aren't that bad. There was some clever Beatles spoof on the other day and it had me humming happy music all day long. It's annoying, but it's also kinda funny too. I mean, I'm getting paid to work my real job where I just happen to edit away the spammers and trolls from the IMC site. It's not time consuming. It doesn't take anything away from my real job 'cause it's so easy that it could be done in my sleep, and it's kinda funny that they think they're causing so much havoc. I can only imagine that they either don't have real jobs, or have such miserable little lives that they feel the need to express themselves by trying to torment us.

Then again, maybe after several years of it, like Matt's experience, it does wear on ya.

       *shrugs*

       Any suggestions folks?

       S.

I know that we're not into "tracking" people to block them from the site. The current troll has posted about 30 postings in the past 10 mins. I'm guessing this has happened sometime in the past? Any suggestions?

cheers,
Sofia

       Hi folks.

Just letting you all know that our daily troll is now posting on the calendar too. I'll take care of those posts for today. Sometimes I think it's too funny when we get these repeat spam posts. If they only knew how easy it is to hide them. Yay for Rob's Editorial Administration interface!!!

       :)

Are we all interested in meeting before next week's general meeting? Sofia is the only person whom I remember giving a positive response about meeting an hour or so before the meeting... Please send a yea or nay over the list so's we can start an agenda.

My first agenda suggestion? Passwords for the Calendar!
I'd also like to talk about the "hidden" policy, as well as the recent increase of conservative posts and troll posts to our website. I think it was Jamie or Andrew who mentioned re-reading the Editorial Policy to see what posts should and should not be hidden? I'd also like to suggest that folks re-read our mission statements, both old and new, to see how those directly tie in with our Editorial Policy.

       Cheers!

       Svea.
