[IMC-Boston-Editorial] Re: [IMC-Boston-Discuss] job listing post question for discussion

I agree with Andrew's sentiment. Years ago we discussed this same topic and agreed that job postings had no place on the newswire. We did not consider creating a "job postings" section on the site at that time. Job postings were specifically excluded from our Newswire criteria because they are, specifically, not news.

I have resservations, but am interested in the idea of a "job postings/opportunities" section, but I think there are several things we should consider before we actively pursue doing so. Firstly, we need to know that all the Editors feel comfortable working with yet another section of the page to catch the trolls. We all know how much trouble we had with the Calendar when it first went live. Secondly, we need to be certain that we have a disclaimor for the section that lets people know that we are not condoning or endorsing any jobs posted to our site. Craigslist has something of that type in their job sections, i think. Just to make sure that people don't follow a lead that gets us in trouble cause it was posted to our site.

Even with those concerns, I think that it's an interesting idea because it also has the potential to be a constant source for new volunteer recruitement. Personally, I don't mind having more folks in Boston IndyMedia. I've always belonged to the school of thought that "the more the merrier". Adding something like this could be a good step in expanding our volunteer base!

     Cheers.

     Svea.

Good point.

I don't know anything about the group in question either, so for the
sake of discussion I'll hold themn in the highest regard.

It might be worth considering adding a classifieds section. I can see
that a forum for jobs with justice or other fair trade exchange type
stuff could be very valuable. It's unfortunately and area that is
likely to get little attention from editors and is open to wide abuse.

With some effort it's liekly we could design a technical and social
solution that is workable, though we should probably wait untill after
the new site ever gets up before we try and pile anymore functionality
on it.

Something to keep in mind though I think.
