I think the title was ok before the change. I would change it back, especially since the author asked you to.
However, if you really want to change it, I will back you up. I think as an editor you can do that if you want. If the author really wants to block your editorial decision, they can join the editorial group for future decisions. For this one, they can ask that the article be removed all together. Its a tough choice but that's just the way it is. 
As editors we have to make decisions and sometimes people won't agree, but we can't please everyone. You put in the hours, you make the decision. 
. . . but I would just change it back.
