hi coras,
In case you're unable to attend tomorrow's meeting, I would like to propose using the below policy (or something similar) for new volunteers... Got it from the Vancouver Indymedia and included it for now in the BIMC Volunteers Manual. The "special meeting" is also explained on the handbook. Let me know what you think.
peace,
sofia

New Volunteers
Prospective volunteers must attend an orientation meeting in order to understand the inner workings of the Boston IMC and the IMCs Principles of Unity, as detailed on this handbook. New members can participate in any working group and produce and publish media, and they are encouraged to sign up to the email Lists to learn more about how indymedia works.
New members may provide input at meetings but not block decisions made by the collective. After a thee-month introductory period, full membership and decision-making privileges can be granted by the collective. During the introductory period, prospective volunteers will be expected to attend at least one general or working group meeting per month. Prospective members are also strongly encouraged to participate in IMC events or events where IMC has a presence.
Members in good standing may block the participation of new volunteers when they have concerns about the individual in question at a special meeting convened to discuss the issue. These concerns include:
- the person in question poses a threat to personal safety;
- the person has violated the Principles of Unity;
- the person is disruptive or otherwise impedes the collectives work.Blocking of new membership could occur at any time during the three-month introductory period. This block needs to occur by a super-majority as outlined in the decision-making process below.
Full membership can also have their membership reviewed if the above concerns are raised, again at a special meeting.
