Howdy,
emarassingly easy fix, if it had only broken 15 min earlier...
so I posted this explaination to the site:
http://boston.indymedia.org/newswire/display/67013/index.php
At approximately 5pm yesterday a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration
Protocol) server misconfiguration caused network connectivity issues
at our hosting site. The situation was shortly resolved and all
systems, except this one, came back online.
Do to family obligations I was unable to get to the server until this
morning, and remote access was unresponsive.
It turns out that when the DHCP server came back on line this server
got it's IP information and DNS server info, but not any routing
information and thus was unreachable (unless you were on the same
physical network, a trick I should have tried last night, oh well)
So once I got to the machine it was a simple matter of typing in the
router's address and we were back up and running.
This situation will not trouble us again as I've statically configured
all the network information and we are no longer reliant on DHCP
service.
