Boston IndyMedia - DNC Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, July 6, 2004 @ 7:30pm,
Lucy Parson's Center, 549 Columbus Avenue, Boston, MA
----------------------------------------
In Attendance: Rob, Svea, John
Because there were so many regular IMC members who didn't attend this meeting, we scaled down the agenda and covered basic pressing business. The following agenda items/decisions were made:
Agenda
------------------
Introduction/New Volunteers:
We had 8 new volunteers attend this meeting whose interests ranged from Video and Fundraising to Print, Radio and Computer Assistance. A General introduction for all new members will be posted after these minutes.
Contact Information
Break-out groups: Video, Print, Tech
After the Orientation at around 8:15pm, an impromptu IMC/BTS meeting was held where we discussed several items including:
Installing a dispatch line in the Public space. (unanimous vote approved to finance ~$100 installation fee)
Streaming Audio for IMC/BTS. Looking for space, T1 to piggyback signal, local programming.
After IMC/BTS meeting at around 9:00, we relocated to the Pour House to finish discussing:
Space Reportbacks
Black Tea Society:
Space is located on 4th floor, shared with Medic, is approximately 12x24 feet. Will have internet and telephone. Need to schedule a date to re-build our computers for this space. Space opens for set-up on Sunday July 25th.
TecsChange:
Is space limited to those with Press Pass only? (answer: yes) Will we be sharing space with local TecsChange folks during the week? (answer: no) Are we signing a contract with TecsChange like we're signing with CCTV? (answer at this time: no)
Boston Social Forum:
During BSF we have confirmed access to a computer lab with 18 iMacs that include internet access and iMovie. We must provide a description of our needs, numbers and use of space to be able to gaurantee our access. It's first-come, first serve here, and we'll be sharing the lab with lots of other folks. We need to formulate our plans for coverage at this event very very soon!
CCTV:
At June 30th meeting Susan requested that we sign a contract for our use of space, that we provide a list of "rules" that IMCsters will be following while at CCTV, all IMCsters must wear an official DNC-IMC press pass for access to the space, training for equipment will happen closer to the date of DNC. Space opens July 24th. Next official meeting with Susan (to sign contract & drop of segments) is scheduled for July 19th.
Finance:
Discussion about fundraising and distribution of funds. Proposal made to distribute all fundraising from this point on a percentage based scale based on our DNC Agenda. (for example: if Radio has ~15% of budget they receive ~15% of fundraised $, if Print has 70% of budget they receive 70% of funds raised, etc). This distribution will not apply to all funds raised before this decision and excludes all grant monies. Will vote at July 11th meeting.
Press Pass:
Proposal made to combine the two Press Pass types (Boston IMC and "Other" IMC) into one type of "Member" pass that will let holders have access to our Contracted space (vote approved w/ full concensus).
Formal proposal for an "Affiliate" pass that does not look anything like the "Member" pass but will still let people affiliated in the independent media movement feel included in our open publishing network. This proposal was made with full consideration for Pete's e-mail "block" and Matt's telephone suggestion that we consider an alternative for folks who are not closely affiliated with the Boston IMC. Formal vote will be held on July 11th.
"Fee" to pay for press pass was proposed at last meeting. We approved a:
"Sliding Scale, suggested donation of $20-$50 to cover space expenses"
"Press Pass" application form proposed at last meeting, posted over e-lists, and formally considered and approved with concensus. Press Pass application can be found here:

Telephone:
Telephone number will be forwarded in near future to help facilitate Comms and other immediate telephone needs., Svea volunteered to take first shift with IMC phone forwarded to her phone.
National Lawyer's Guild
Contacted the NLG and received several offers for legal advice during the DNC. Ursula is providing Lawyer contact info via e-mail Wed ofr Thurs.
Food Not Bombs/Seeds of Peace
Contacted food organizers and added IMC to list of organizations to receive food. IMC must provide number of meals needed, and pick-up/delivery of food to our locations.
Scar Stories
We all compared IMC organizing scar stories including: how much sleep we get at night, how long it's been since any of us had a date, and what fantastical fantasies we have planned for the beautifully wonderfully magnificently empty calendar month of August.
