Hi there (anyone? anyone?),
Thanks Pete for sending this out. Please come to our next Print meeting (Thursday 7:00pm Meeting at the Junebug Café) to get a list of Ad Sponsors that you can target when trying to get dough for our paper. I will also have a list ready for you guys at the Boston Indy office.
As Ad Coordinator of the group, I would like to set some rules so everyone's on the same page. Ad Sponsors should be contacted ideally only by ONE person. I don't want them to be contacted by multiple people or contacted again after they have already agreed to sponsor us. If we're organized and professional about this, we'll be treated as such. Ground rules:
- if you want to contact an Ad Sponsor (because you know someone there, etc)., please CONTACT ME FIRST so I can add you to our database;
- if you have any new Ad Sponsors standing in line to support us, sent their name and contact to me so I can add them to the database;
- be assertive but polite, this is about getting our news going with the widest distribution possible and to include as many voices as possible;
- be very clear about our message: "We're an independent news media that was created as an answer to corporate media." We want our Ad Sponsors to know what we are about, BUT don't go on a political tirade of your own. Remember, you are representing the collective.
That's pretty much it. I think you guys can live with it... Thanks a MILLION for being a part of this. We won't be able to pull it off without you.
Peace,

Thanks to Robert for making our underwriting rate cards (in the office file cabinet now!) and Sofia for compiling a list of potential advertisers, right now we are fully prepared to hit the streets. EVERYBODY should be involved. Each of us I'm sure has the ability or connections to sell at least one ad or get a donation of some size. Without people's cooperation on this effort we will not be able to make our deadline, I hat this position of being the whip cracker, and I don't want to be seen as any kind of leader, so please interpret this as encouragement to become your own leaders.
(short pep talk follows, please skip it if its not neccessary)
In my travels around the city, my forays into the world of funding, and my perusal of the world's media sources i have sensed an ENORMOUS potential for the growth of Indymedia in Boston. I'm dead serious here. People in the other independent media look at us as a natural meeting place. Because we have an open membership and an open post policy there is more POTENTIAL for trust with us than any one else. Our audience has been expanding and will continue to expand as we distribute our stuff in more ways (i.e. web streaming radio and the paper). In the funding world, more and more money is being funneled into media projects but there are things you have to do to get it, mainly meaning building on success and really reaching and serving a wide audience. Potential for change. If we can hold it together here, and get through what is really a simple task of creating and distributing a paper. We can grow beyond any news source currently serving Boston, and certainly any independent
one. We are more efficient, more truthful, more open, and more transparent.
The catch is, we have to work for it. This may mean making a few sacrifices for the paper. Instead of reading that engrossing pulp novel, get out and write about what's happening, instead of watching the latest kick ass film come help us get the office rolling, instead of wandering through boston's winding streets come down and try and sell some Ads in the shops along them. I personally find it more entertaining to try to take over the information highways from the corporate media as a member of a collectively run media source than to do pretty much anything else, so I'm not asking for anything I would not do myself. So let's empower ourselves and others by getting active now, not later. Let's get it together and save this hellbound world. call me to get plugged in 617-620-1989.
-Pete
