Deganawida was the spiritual leader who, along with Hiawatha, brought 
the Great Peace to the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) people (the native people 
of the vast majority of what is now New York State, as well as parts of 
Pennsylvania and Ontario). The Great Peace ended the fighting between the 
Mohawk, Seneca, Oneida, Cayuga, and Onandaga (the 5 nations that made up 
the confederation) and made use of what is argued by some to be the 
world's first constitutional democracy:
