[Deganawida-sysadmin] today's downtime

Hi y'all.

dega and all sites on it were inaccessible for some 6 hours this
afternoon-evening EST. This was due to a botched security patch that blew
away our connectivity to the net. I can honestly say I've never heard of a
freebsd -stable patch breaking things so horribly before - I even tested
the patch on a local machine and had no problems. In any event I will try
to be more careful about applying security fixes in the future...

Out of all the machines I patched (5 total) only dega was affected by this
bug (looks like this is due to the fact that it uses two network
interfaces cards). The FreeBSD developers are taking a lot of flak for
this one (including from me)...

Anyway, double plus super thanks (again!) to quinten and mtoups who helped
me get dega back up again, and double plus super sorry about the outage.

Peace,
Brian Szymanski
