Description of applying group:
The Indymedia network is a global network of media activists.

Projectplan

The World Social Forum (WSF), a global meeting of activists who oppose
capitalist globalisation, has been held annually since 2001. In 2006,
the WSF is breaking with tradition by being held in not one, but three
places nearly simultaneously. The so-called polycentric WSF 2006 will
take place from the 19th to the 23rd of January in Bamako, Mali and from
the 24th to the 29th of January in Caracas, Venezuela and in March 2006
in Karachi, Pakistan.

The WSF in Bamako, Mali is a historic event, as this is the first time
that the Forum takes place in Africa, and is a key stepping stone to the
WSF 2007, which will take place in Kenya. In addition, the Forum meeting
will be an opportunity for African activists to network and build links
of solidarity between their various struggles against neo-liberalism.

Historically Indymedia has had a close relationship with the WSF, as the
Indymedia network of volunteer-run Independent Media Centres (IMCs) grew
out of the same movement against neo-liberalism and for humanity that
led to the World Social Forum. The Indymedia network has helped spread
the world from the WSF from 2002 onwards, ensuring that an Independent
Media Centre is available at each WSF to allow diverse voices from the
Forum to be heard. Indymedia always understood the NGO based process of
Social Forums in need of critical interventions to ensure its
connectivity to grass roots activism and information autonomy of local
communities and basis groups.

As for Independent Media Africa is a challenge. While large parts of
the populations in Africa still do not have access to the global media,
they are lacking specifically access to more interactive media like the
internet that enable not only to receive news but also to produce news
globally. Local, private and pirate radio stations and even small scale
newspapers form a strong force of independent media in many African
places. They are maintained by devoted media activists. The WSF gives a
great opportunity to network between these local activists as much as
discuss chances and possibilities to increase the use of the internet
for networking and eventually producing more African news for within
and beyond Africa.

It is with this background in mind that we are proposing to develop and
Independent Media Centre at the Bamako WSF in January 2006.

In order to facilitate this, Indymedia activists from IMCs in Africa
and Europe will
travel to Bamako to document the WSF there using the written word,
digital photography and audio recording. Our programme of activities
will include:

1) Travel to Bamako and set up an Independent Media Centre in the form
of a location (most likely hosted in an Internet Cafe') where activists
can come to submit their stories from the WSF.

2) Provide daily coverage of the WSF using the Indymedia South Africa
website as a portal to upload stories, photographs and audio programming
from the WSF.

3) Host workshops to discuss the relevance of Indymedia and independet
media in general with African and other (media) activists.

4) Host workshops on the practical use of open publishing of news and
stories within the framework of Indymedia.

5) Host a series of film showings.

6) Create the spirit and enthusiasm among local activists in Bamako and
Mali to create an IMC in Mali.

Target Groups
Through this program we hope to reach out to local and African
activists during the WSF in Mali, to connect African Media activists
and to foster the use and discussion on Independent Media among African
activists.
