Hi comrades
We had our national meeting of Indymedia South Africa this weekend,
which included people from the collectives in Cape Town, Johannesburg
and Harare, Zimbabwe as well as interested people from East London and
Durban. We discussed the World Social Forum and our plans for it - we'll
have a more complete answer by this Friday as to what we propose to do -
but the short version at this point is that we are trying to fundraise
for additional equipment, etc. to help us with covering events in
Nairobi. We also are going to work together with the comrades in Harare
- due to Zimbabwe's repressive media laws, they can't organise openly as
an IMC, but nonetheless they've been producing a newsletter (Township
Voices) on social struggles which they distribute in the townships of
Harare.
At this point two of our comrades (Ahmed and Prishani from Jo'burg) are
guaranteed to be in Nairobi due to funding provided by the Centre for
Civil Society. As to the three tickets which are funded by the
Umverteilen application, we are discussion the best use of them, because
they are estimated at Jo'burg to Nairobi, yet people are also in other
parts of the country, and, as I said, Harare, Zimbabwe. We are also
discussing with local NGOs, some of whom are planning to charter a
flight to Nairobi (which might bring the cost per ticket down).
We're very interested in having a discussion about effective African
Indymedia during the convergence in Nairobi, and might even plan to make
a documentary about this.
Anyway, as I said, more news on Friday...
Peter
