hi people
responding to John's email on accomodation and transport -
i propose we worry less about being physically close to Kasarani. the IMC
convergence is about building and strengthening independent media in Africa,
yes?
so we are planning to build a transmitter, teach ourselves
radio/print/online media techniques, learn about (and practice)
consensus-based organising and (lastly) cover the WSF. when this is all
over, our coverage of the Forum is likely to be the least important, the
least durable thing we do -
so i suggest that rather than sleeping 8-to-a-room in a small house (ie 40+
people sharing two toilets, one standard-size kitchen), we rent the original
guest house (or another one out of range of "WSF inflation") so that we have
enough space to set up a temporary community for learning and sharing
experiences.
we can arrange with a matatu owner to do a morning run to Kasarani, and
return at some suitably late hour - learn to use public transport for any
shuttling in between.
i think it's extremely important that the space we rent is the space we need
for meetings, workshops, cooking and hanging out - not just space to sleep.
we will be squandering this opportunity if we are focused on reporting on
the WSF.
so i am strongly against renting a 5 bedroom house. i do think that the
sooner some kind of space is rented, the sooner we can plan to use it,
whatever its benefits and limitations.
thanks again for your work, John
terna
