Hello,
I'd like to subscribe to the list for the media work being prepared for the
World Social Forum in Nairobi. I got this address from the people at
Prometheus Radio, who I contacted because I did some work in Kenya this
summer. In August, I volunteered with the Nairobi-based Center for
International Voluntary Service, and I recently started talking with them
about the possibility of setting up a community radio in Kenya. Their site
is www.civskenya.com
I live in New York, and my work involves immigrants, many of whom are not
very familiar with technology. Yet over the past 2 years, we have set up an
Internet radio project and produced many podcasts. As a result of this
experience, I am comfortable working with people for whom digital media is
very new.
If you are interested in hearing some of the pieces that we have done, you
can listen at
www.live365.com/stations/queenscommunityradio
or, you can find some of our initial efforts at
http://geocities.com/queenscommunityradio/fhch.html
My knowledge at this point is related to using CDex and audacity, both of
which can be downloaded for free. I also have some experience working with a
hand-held digital voice recorder. However, given the relative cost of
technology in Africa, I don't think that this would be an option for most
people.
Anyway, please let me know if my skills would be valuable for workshops
during the WSF. I would be happy to contribute that way, and I'd be
interested in participating in the setting up of the radio station.
Zoe
We are the ones we have waited for.
