Hi imc-africa,
Time is getting very short and I'm getting really antsy about getting
our funding request for the radio station equipment into
imc-finance. Take a look at
https://docs.indymedia.org/view/Global/WsF2007ImcFinance. I just
posted what I hope will be the final draft of our imc-finance
request. I meshed this from what many people have written, including
parts lists from Prometheus radio and language from a variety of us here.
The proposal asks for $4000 to pay specifically for radio station
equipment. So imc-finance understands why we're asking for radio
equipment and not for money to rent the space itself and for travel
by African IMC delegates, I put a sentence about our already
receiving other funding. I think that will answer a lot of questions
imc-finance may have otherwise had about our priorities. I hope
imc-finance will see the radio station as an essential part of the
effort, and a major driving force behind the initial idea for this IMC.
I indicated that all equipment, including computer equipment, will
techincally remain property of imc-kenya, even if it moves to Maseno
for permanent use there. Sphinx, Hannah, others, please correct me
if I'm wrong.
I have not heard from John specifically regaring this information (hi
John!), nor have I heard any specific complaint about the idea of my
posting this to imc-finance on behalf of imc-africa if John doesn't
want to be the one dealing with this.
Please let me know as soon as possible if that is a
problem. Otherwise, I would like to post this by the end of Monday.

---++ SUMMARY:
Request from the imc-africa working group to imc-finance for funds to
support an international IMC to be open from January 13 to January
27, 2007 in Nairobi, Kenya, providing independent media coverage
of the World Social Forum (taking place from January 20-25). The
WSF IMC in Naoribi will be an essential place for African and
international independent media activists to meet, attending skill
shares and workshops about issues relating to independent media that
will enable them to create or better support independent media
institutions in their home countries. Participants will also build a
functioning low power radio station that will remain in Kenya after
the World Social Forum ends.
---++ Details
DETAILS:
For the last several months, independent media makers and Indymedia
organizers in Kenya, throughout Africa and
around the world have been working together, both on-line and in
face-to-face meetings, on a project to build a temporary independent
media center (IMC) in Nairobi, Kenya, during the January '07 World Social
Forum. Discussions have mainly taken place on the
"imc-africa at lists.indymedia.org" list, though there have also been
conference calls and IRC chats. Indymedia activists from Africa,
Europe, North America, South America and Asia have been actively
participating in this organizing.
This "convergence-based" IMC will provide text-based, audio, and
(potentially) video coverage of the World Social Forum, both on-line
and through a local low-power radio station, enabling the
participants to create independent media coverage of the WSF during
the forum. Thousands of organizers will be coming to the World
Social Forum from around the globe, especially from Africa; this IMC
will empower activists (especially those in Africa) to create
effective independent media institutions in their countries. Also,
all the equipment purchased for this IMC will
remain in Kenya for use by Kenyan independent media projects. After
the WSF, Prometheus Radio Project will move the radio station to
Kenya's Maseno University where students and faculty, in conjunction
with the Kenya IMC, will organize it as an ongoing community media project.
---++Program Detail:
The Nairobi/World Social Forum IMC's activities will include:
1) Building, through a series of hands-on workshops led by the
Prometheus Radio Project (read "key organizers/supporters" below), an
on-air low power radio station to provide coverage of the WSF.
2) Provide daily coverage of the WSF using an Indymedia website as a
portal to upload stories, photographs and audio programming from the WSF.
3) Publish two Indymedia Print editions during the WSF to reach out
to WSF delegates and Nairobi population
4) Hosting workshops on horizontal decision making processes
5) Hosting workshops to discuss the relevance of Indymedia and
independent media in general with African and other (media) activists.
6) Hosting workshops on the practical use of open publishing of news
and stories within the framework of Indymedia.
7) Hosting a series of film showings.
8) Acting as a hub for myriad independent media-making workshops that
will benefit attendees of the World Social Forum, specifically those
who will take these skills back to their local communities. (Glance
at the imc-africa working group archives to see all the exciting
projects that have been proposed.)
9) Creating a spirit and enthusiasm among local activists in Nairobi
and Kenya to resume and energize the formation of a permanent IMC in Kenya.
---++ Key Organizers/Supporters:
-- the IMC-Africa working group, (imc-africa at lists.indymedia.org)
-- the Kenya-IMC group. "IMC Kenya" has been in existance since 2004
after sending several
representatives to the African Indymedia conference in Dakar,
Senegal. The Kenya IMC has passed through most stages of the new-imc
process. The project hopes to use kenya.indymedia.org as its primary
site and to strengthen the Kenya IMC with skill shares to enable it
to be sustainable.
-- Prometheus Radio Project (http://www.prometheusradio.org), an
organization that supports and builds low-power-radio stations around the
world, will provide technical advice and assistance for a low power radio
station to be built in Nairobi for the duration of the WSF (with equipment
to remain in Kenya for use by future low power radio initiatives.
-- students and faculty from Kenya's Maseno University, who will
participate in ongoing independent media projects after the WSF is over.
---++ Financial Detail:
The imc-africa working group is requesting $4000 from imc-finance to
support the Nairobi/World Social Forum IMC and future Kenyan
independent media projects.
Imc-africa has already received some grant money from a German
foundation to support the intended IMC space in Nairobi and travel by
delegates from IMCs around Africa. The working group is still
seeking funds to provide the equipment necessary to build the
Naorobi/WSF IMC radio station, and other equipment and tools
necessary to create the infrastructure of the Nairobi/WSF IMC.
To simplify our application to imc-finance, the imc-africa working
group has decided to apply for $4000 -- funds that would cover parts
for the radio station (budget below). As mentioned above, after the
WSF, Prometheus Radio Project will move the station to Maseno
University where students and faculty, in conjunction will imc-kenya,
will rebuild it and organize it as one of Kenya's only true
independent community media voices. All equipment will remain
property of imc-Kenya.
As the World Social Forum is rapidly approaching we kindly ask the
imc-finance working group to address this request promptly. We ask
for the working group to reach a decision by November 30, 2006.
