hey folks, ange and zoe in particular (is it the two of you spearheading
the funding request for outside-of-africa delegates to the NCDXF?)

here are some thoughts on:
1) the NCDX foundation and 'callsign'

2) evidence of success of the radio model we're going to be pursuing
together

3) some biographies of andy gunn and hannah sassaman, the prometheus
organizers who will be travelling to kenya to help and learn with all of
you!

1) the NCDX foundation. in this grant request, callsign likely means --
what radio station do you work with? zoe sullivan just wrote a great
summary.

but i also think that the northern california DX foundation was founded
by a ham -- also known as amateur -- radio operator. ham radio
operators broadcast their content on a reserved radio band, and they do
essential work in connecting communities to each other when corporate
media infrastructure fails, or when communities are seperated from other
forms of media infrastructure.

ham radio operators each have a unique -callsign- -- meaning a series of
numbers and letters that they use to identify themselves when they are
communicating over the ham radio airwaves, locally or around the world.
(ham radio signals can travel very far, especially at night).

i think it's great that this foundation supports hams, but i think it
might be worth a phonecall to the group, as the proposal we are putting
in to them is not associated at all with ham radio -- amateur radio as
they see it -- but with FM community radio. i'd hope that they'd be
interested in providing funding even without the connection to ham
radio, but it's worth making the connection to be sure that we don't
spend too much time on the funding request if it isn't likely to be
supported because of the kind of radio technology the IMC and Maseno
want to use. let me know your thoughts on this.

2) evidence/experience of success. a second point -- if it is
worthwhile to pursue this grant, here are some thoughts on the meaing of
this paragraph you posted:

> "contesting experience and any other information you think would be
> helpful to the NCDXF in assessing the likelihood of success of the
> operation."

seems to mean -- can you send any information that can help to provide
evidence that the project you are undertaking will be successful. in
the case of the radio station building projects, prometheus has a number
of films about stations we've built, including one in tanzania, that
show the strength of the stations and the organizing model that we're
going to be pursuing together. we can send those along to the
foundation, or write short paragraphs describing those projects and
their strengths and successes.

3) biographies of prometheus organizers. in terms of bios, here are
some bios from me and andy, who are the prometheus technicians who will
be coming to kenya. siyade gemechisa is about to go on another trip to
jordan and won't be coming to kenya.

thanks so much ange, zoe, and all,
hannah s.
