[Imc-africa] Where we are with preparation for the WSF-IMC

Hi Sphinx

Thanks for this summary. We had a Cape Town Indymedia collective meeting
today, and it was decided that we'd like to help pull together a funding
proposal ASAP. In our minds, while we would like to get people from
South Africa to Nairobi, our biggest priority is to use the WSF as an
event to deepen the networking between comrades, in other words, to
build the capacity for people to 'be their own journalists'. So this
means that we would like to emphasise training & building contacts with
comrades / movements.

So this means that we want to help build the space in Nairobi, that we
want to be part of creating media there and training people there, etc.
With this in mind, we'd like to see a funding proposal done as soon as
possible. It seems, from what John has told us, we're getting a lot of
detail about the situation in Nairobi. I'll look over what we got in
detail tomorrow and trying and figure out the gaps in a budget. If we
can get a rough idea of a programme together, we can then do a proposal,
and send it in to funders - we're hoping by the end of this week. The
details of exactly who does what workshop can be worked out once we know
who's going to be around, etc.

One issue which is a bit tricky is transport. For instance, at this
point, it costs about R 4000 to get people from Cape Town to Nairobi and
back via air travel. Nearer to January, it will cost more. At the same
time, some of the progressive NGOs in South Africa are talking about
organising a ship to take a large number of comrades to Nairobi, which
would make travel costs much lower again. So which option to chose at
this stage? We're not sure.

BTW. I spoke to Grace this evening to introduce myself and hear how
things were going in Kenya (I tried to get hold of John, but no one was
answering his phone). One of the things I raised is that we need to know
who funds will be channelled through in Nairobi. She said she'd speak to
Oloo and I'll call her again tomorrow.

So yeah, I hope that clarifies our thinking from South Africa. We can't
say anything at this stage about numbers of comrades we expect to go to
Nairobi - but we fully support that the group should be
gender-balanced. Sphinx, you seem to be suggesting that we should do a
big Indymedia proposal for transport for everyone you mention on the
list in your email? Is this right?

Aluta continua!
