Update on the Radio Station project for the WSF
Hello all! This is the most recent communication we got with the Prometheus
radio folks.
It has a detail list of what we need for the radio and a few questions we need
more information on, to be able to come-up with a clear picture.
-Following earlier discussions the consideration was that the final radio
station could be at Maseno University. The question then for Judith is , How is
the school responding to all these ideas we threw around about the possibility
of the permanent radio-station being set-up at the school?.
-The next question will be for John, Oloo and Grace to check-out if we can get
space to set-up our Independent Media Center in the official WSF space. We also
need information on what are the legal regulations concerning operation of Low
Powered Fm radio stations in Kenya.
-If we get feedback soon, we may be able to answer the questions from Petri :
? will the radio studio and transmitter be in the same place? ( if not, that
is fine,
but we need more equipment to make the link). do they have a tall
building for the antenna? is that the same place where the studio
will be?
-From the information in Petri?s mail, Most of what we?ll need to buy
locally will be for the mask and antenna related stuff. Which in itself will be
determine by information on the distance from the place we?ll be having the
antenna to the place we?ll set the radio station. That is, if we got a tall
building on which we could place the antenna, then the mask of the antenna will
not need be too big. Of course the cost of building an antenna Mask in Kenya.
If the studio is far from the antenna, we?ll need to consider the cost of
cable to run from the antenna to the location of the station.
The other things like studio equipment if available in Kenya would have been
imported and it may be better for us to see to it that we buy the right tech
stuff we need.
Here is the complete detail list from Prometheus radio on what we?ll need for
the radio station.
-At least two computers with good soundcards.
-Two exciters, since we?ll like to run workshops on how to build an exciter.
-We?ll have to include
Transmitters

hello gentlemen,
sorry for the long delay on this, but petri and andy put together this
cost list to begin considering for equipment purchase in kenya. please
let us know if this is useful or if there's another way you need it
presented, and thanks for your work. scroll to the bottom for the
intial cost list, and above that is petri's analysis of costs based on
his international station building experience. there are a few
questions in his email that someone at maseno, maybe judith, should
answer, about the permanent infrastructure of that station (like how the
studio and transmitter setup will work), and that we should consider for
the convergence station at the nairobi meeting.
best,
hannah s.

this is pretty good to start. I'd add about $500 for antenna and
mast related expenses, most likely purchased locally- that added to
the contingency. also, it would be good to have at least two
computers associated with the station, with good soundcards. If we
build the exciter there during the workshop, it is probably good to
buy two exciters.
to get more detailed- we'd have to know a few things. will the radio
studio and transmitter be in the same place? ( if not, that is fine,
but we need more equipment to make the link). do they have a tall
building for the antenna? is that the same place where the studio
will be? do they already have the computers they would like to use?
do they have audio equipment that can be used? etcetera. for a
fundraising budget for equipment, i think $3000 is a comfortable
number, and we can make do with a bit less if necessary.
