hey there fabian,
thanks for forwarding your note. it's really strange -- i just met
laura flanders at the national conference for media reform in memphis,
tennessee. she knows the prometheus radio project very well. i
mentioned to her that there were independent media makers working and
learning in nairobi, and she mentioned she was interested in meeting up
with people from the convergence center.
laura flanders is a national radio deejay
with air america radio (http://www.lauraflanders.com/) and with the
nation magazine. here's some more info about her:

and i find her honest and very interested in the struggle for
independent media
air america is a big service in america that provides mainstream
progressive-type news over the FM dial to some cities. what i told
laura is that i would mention her interest to the IMC-africa media
collective and that there might be more information later, but that it
wasn't my decision. she said she was interested in doing an interview
with a few journalists from the IMC on saturday of the forum.
it is an important question -- whether or not the journalists at the
convergence want mainstream media attention to what they are doing.
there are obvious benefits (potential attention that can attract new
collaborators and funding) and obvious risks (too much attention to the
space, distraction from the process that the group wants to engage in,
and importance in general on making a consensus decision about outside
media coverage). and always when there is the presence of radio
transmitters, there is risk. my instinct would be to not invite a lot
of mainstream journalists to the convergence space but i think the
decision should rest with the larger IMC... i could be oversensitive,
though. what do others think?
laura asked me to send her the phone number that i will have in kenya
(that is, by the way, 0727 804 446. to call us from america, one would
dial 011 254 727 804 446), which i am happy to do just in case anyone
does want to talk to her on saturday the 20th.
