Laura Flanders has been a real supporter of Indymedia since the
beginning and my experiences with her have always been really
positive. She has been invovled in a number of convergences over the
years I think having her around the IMC in Kenya would be very
positive. Yes, Air America is a big "mainstream-y" type operation,
but (unless anyone has had any other experiences with her) I
definitely think if Laura is the one coming, good things will come of it.

Generally I'm a proponent of inviting mainstream media into Indymedia
spaces, within reason, to let them see what great stuff can happen if
people make independent media passionately, collaboratively and
non-hierarchically. At most IMC convergences I've attended we've
invited mainstream media to come through the IMC in the presence of
someone from the IMC, sort of as a tour guide, and made sure they ask
permission before filming anyone. Usually what comes of it is a
"look at these kooky activists" kind of story, but generally if we're
inviting, the spin is positive.

I think in this case the decision about how to deal with media
inquiries should be made by people in Naoribi once they get the sense
about whether having the radio transmitter up is going to be a big
concern. Maybe the choice would be made to somewhat restrict access
to mainstream reporters from Kenya, though international reports
would be less likely to appear on the radar screen of anyone in the
Kenyan bureaucracy who doesn't like the idea of radio transmissions.
