Folks --
Here's the general technical situation, as I observe it here.
1) The local membership of IMC Kenya is interested and excited about
learning how to use an open publishing website, but no energy has gone
into it until this convergence. A general observation is that the
internet isn't a likely core communications method (internal and
external) for indymedia here, especially as internet access is limited
and people mostly pay per minute.
2) The existing installation is an outdated sf-active on ahisma, which
is scheduled for demolition.
3) The two immediate issues with the existing installation have been
fixed, so we should be able to move forward. The current site may be
sustainable for the WSF convergence -- but it's hard to say. And no
one local has access to that server. It would be great if someone
here could get shell or root access to ahisma, if that's appropriate.
4) The current site is pretty clearly not sustainable in the long run,
and it would be great to get a new installation running on a new
server. We'd love to be able to knowledge share around a sustainable
site running maintained software on a better server. Soo if it was
possible to set up a new installation of something, that would be
great -- whether or not we can transition to it during the WSF
coverage. John, if you were able to do that, it would be awesoome.
5) Lots of exciting journalism and learning and work and
community-building is happening here. hurrah!
I want to acknowledge people's lack of comfort -- and in some cases
active disapproval -- of the fact that two Americans are communicating
on behalf of and coordinating tech for IMC Kenya on the email lists,
and it is probably warranted, but all I can say is that we are doing
our best to focus on knowledge sharing so that the local folks in
Nairobi can have a connection to the network and useful infrastructure
in the medium to long-term. And generally, as commented, email isn't
used as the same kind of day-to-day organizing tool by the organizers
and journalists here -- which I think creates a disconnect which is
complicated to overcome. I look forward to processing and discussing
all of that in the future.
Thanks!
