VENUE

DATE
16 February 2008
PRESENT
1. Robert Matumbai (RM) Koch FM and Kalamashaka Hip Hop Group
2. Patrick (P) Ghetto Film Club
3. John Bwakali (JB) Kenya Indymedia
AGENDA
1. PeaceBeat
2. Korogocho Peace Event
1.1 The meeting started at 3.40 PM.
1.2 JB informed the meeting about the PeaceBeat initiative (Draft Concept attached). He explained that PeaceBeat was an initiative that sought to tap into music and other forms of art to empower musicians and artists, plus their societies, as it refreshes and educates listeners. He handed the PeaceBeat concept to RM and P for their perusal. PeaceBeat will primarily focus on sale of socially conscious music, movies and documentaries through an e-commerce enabled PeaceBeat website. Proceeds from the sales will be shared between the artists and independent media.
1.3 RM presented four peace and justice songs from Kalamashaka and other artists for exposure and consequent sales through the PeaceBeat initiative as soon as the website is ready.
1.4 P presented three movies for similar exposure and sale through the PeaceBeat initiative.
1.5 Both RM and P will consult their fellow artists and film makers before fully ratifying the PeaceBeat initiative. Another meeting was set for Tuesday 19 February for the PeaceBeat initiative to be finalized and circulated.
2.1.1 JB informed the meeting that previous Kenya Indymedia meetings had been held to plan for a peace bonanza in Kangemi. These meetings had been held at a restaurant in the Nairobi City Center and in Kangemi and had been attended by artists and activists from Kangemi, including Douglas and Oloo, members of Kenya Indymedia.
2.1.2 The Kangemi peace bonanza had been postponed to enable more grassroots consultation between the many different artists and activists in Kangemi. The meeting then discussed the possibility of holding a peace event at Korogocho, where the Koch FM community radio station is located.
2.1.3 RM informed the meeting that two weeks would be a sufficient time for them to prepare for such an event.
2.1.4 P noted that film screening could definitely be part of the event. The film to be screened would be from the ghetto film club. In between the socially conscious films, there will be peace and justice music by members of Kalamashaka, Ukoo Fulani Mau Mau and possibly artists from Kangemi. Interspersed between the movies and music will be open forum discussions concerning the issues that the music and the movies will be addressing.
2.1.5 The Tuesday 19th meeting will peruse a budget and commission full fledged preparations for the event.
2.1.6 The meeting decided that the event would be held on Sunday 02 March at the Korogocho Social hall.
2.1.7 The meeting ended at 4.50 PM.
