1) World Social Forum 2008: a Global Day of Action and Mobilisation

At the end of January, thousands of people all over the world will march, speak, celebrate, and dialogue in villages, rural zones, and urban centers, in the context of hundreds of decentralized self-organized actions. They will mobilize over a one-week period in January, culminating in a Global Day of Mobilisation and Action on the 26th to show that another world is possible.

At the same period, the "old" world will meet in Davos for the World Economic Forum, bringing together its economists, experts, ideologies and techniques that produce violence, exploitation, exclusion, poverty, hunger and ecological disaster, depriving people of human rights and our Earth of its resources.

The World Social Forum is an open space where social movements, networks, NGOs and other civil society organisations come together to raise issues, debate ideas, formulate proposals, share experiences, and build networks for effective action. These movements are opposed to a world ruled by capitalism and all forms of imperialism and domination.

Since the first worldwide encounter in 2001, the World Social Forum has become a permanent global process seeking and building alternatives to neo-liberal policies.

World Social Forums have taken place at the end of January at different sites throughout the world every year for the past seven years, and this spirit of diversity will continue to be reflected in the activities planned for the Global Day of Mobilisation and Action in 2008.

The website www.wsf2008.net is the main connection tool for all participants in the decentralized WSF 2008. Invite your friends to join and contribute through action spaces, present your action, upload your videos, publish news and connect your actions with those of others.

Be creative about expressing your ideas in short videos. Documentaries, interviews, fiction, video art, news reports, music videos or any other format can be used to show that another world is possible.

You don't have to be a professional filmmaker to participate on this exhibition: short videos can be produced in any format and uploaded directly to the website www.wsf2008.net. But if you want to make high quality videos for live broadcasting in public screenings, there's an ftp site to upload large files.

4) Be the media: create news about your action or join alternative coverage of Global Day of Action

The Global Day of Mobilisation and Action puts WSF 2008 into the field of Communication more than ever, conferring a great responsibility on the alternative media for expressing the real power of this international journey.

If you're a journalist, photographer, video-maker, writer, radio or other media producer, you can join the alternative media coverage of WSF 2008 to build the story of this global journey towards a better world. If you're a participant in an action, you can use the website www.wsf2008.net to inform the world about your action. Just click on "create news" on the right-hand side menu when you have accessed you action space.

As a participant, you can also look for actions that will happen in your city and get in contact with organisers and participants to set up media coverage or to contribute to the action by uploading articles, pictures, audio or video files, relating the history of the Day of Global Action or answering the call to produce short videos about another possible world.

5) Developing connections with other actions

he WSF 2008 website provides means of connecting with people and organisations all over the world in order to exchange experiences or build alliances and coalitions.

Participants in an action can develop connections with other local actions, contacting action spaces from other areas and continents and proposing international connections with them.
Connections can be unilateral or reciprocal and involve just one or several actions.

Step 1: Communicating in an action space other than your own to suggest establishing a connection

- You may ask to join a "remote" action space where there is an action with which you want to connect, and leave a message about establishing a connection;
- You can also communicate locally inside your action space about initiatives of connections.
- You can create a specific "wiki" or "message" to hold your exchange with your connected counterparts (see in the right menu bearing the name of your action space "create wiki, send message").

After that, you can establish links to other actions which you consider connected to yours.

Step 2 - show a link from your action to other actions in your action page

- Check the node number of the action you want to connect to by noting the internet address of the page where this action is displayed (http://www.wsf2008.net/eng/node/xxxx) and note the number xxxx;
- Go to "edit" you own action and in the "description" text box, insert a paragraph describing your connection to action xxx;
- Copy the following text, and paste it in the text box action description when you edit it: link name
- Change the xxx for the real node number you have noted, and replace "link name" by the name of the action or the organisation with which you are your connecting.
- Click on "Submit your action"

After "submitting" your changes, you will see that you have edited a link to action xxxx you wanted to connect with, and your counterparts may want to do the same and link their action to yours.

6) Tele-activities: intercommunication using internet video conferencing during Global Action Days

If you have an Internet connection and computer with web-cam, microphone and speakers available at your action venue, you can create intercommunication between groups of 5 to 30 people during the global day or preparatory activities and meetings.

Use internet widespread instant messaging systems, with audio and video to send live images and sound from your action and (if possible) show the image of your counterpart using a video projector and loudspeakers.

- See examples and documentation here:
