convener) for arrangements in Durban by the C17 civil society working group. 
This should give comrades a better sense of the organising on the ground in the 
lead up to Nov- Dec in Durban. For the fundraising commitee there are important 
logistical details to draw from when finalising IMC Africa plans.

Dear Colleagues
The Civil Society Committee for COP 17 (C17) has developed an action plan for 
its activities related to COP 17. We would like to invite you to the next broad 
civil society meeting to discuss these plans.  It will be held in Durban on the 
5th and 6th of July 2011.  This will give us an opportunity to coordinate plans 
for the rest of the year, and detail the way forward.

Please save the date, and we will send you a more detailed email shortly.We look 
forward to seeing you there. In the meantime, please let Siziwe Khanyile know if

Joint South African civil society plans for COP17: 
Invitation to participate in planning, preparation & programming 

In light of South Africa’s hosting of the UNFCCC COP17 in Durban at the end of 
2011, South African civil society considers it imperative to facilitate local 
and international civil society participation in the negotiations, and develop 
and highlight independent solutions to climate change.

COP17 is a significant event for South Africa and the region. It draws attention 
to the impacts of climate change on the continent, and provides a stage to 
highlight the solutions required, in terms of global emissions decline and 
enhancing the ability of poor and vulnerable communities to cope with the 
impacts of climate change.

If climate change is to be curbed significantly, governments must come to 
agreement on strong targets for emissions reductions at source.  It is 
important, therefore, that civil society is able to pressure world governments 
to act.

Civil Society Committee for COP17 (C17)
At a January meeting of more than 80 South African environmental, social, trade 
union, faith community and climate justice organisations, the Civil Society 
Committee for COP17 (C17) was established and mandated to facilitate civil 
society engagement in the lead up to and at COP17. Its tasks include 
coordinating the Global Day of Action, coordinating the autonomous Civil Society 
Space, supporting mobilisation across South Africa, and providing a platform to 
publicise COP17 civil society events. These actions will contribute to a greatly 
strengthened climate justice movement. 

Global Day of Action
The Global Day of Action (GDA) is a traditional and important event at the 
UNFCCC COPs. The primary focus is a mass march of international and national 
community, labour, youth, academic, religious and environmental organisations 
and activists to bring to the fore the need for global leaders to solve issues 
of climate change and environmental degradation.

Autonomous Civil Society Space
At each COP civil society groups organise independent events, share knowledge, 
strategise, hold conferences and build international links for campaigns and 
initiatives.  There is immense value in having a single precinct to meet these 
needs.  The Civil Society Space is inclusive of all civil society, and will also 
be open to the general public.

C17 neither endorses nor restricts any particular views, events, actions or 
activities.  It is guided by common climate change and climate justice 
principles.


The autonomous civil society space planned for COP17

Since its establishment, C17 has broadened its links to organisations and 
networks which were not part of the initial planning.   Much effort has been 
expended on linking with international organisations and building links with 
organisations across Africa. At meetings in India, Tanzania, Copenhagen, Bangkok 
and Dakar, members shared information about C17 plans and invited participation 
from the international community.

The first UNFCCC intercessional in Bangkok in April 2011 was important point of 
contact with international climate justice movements and the current meeting in 
Bonn will provide an opportunity for C17 to present its work plans and invite 
participation at an official side event.

South African Civil Society preparations for COP17
Side Event in Bonn, July 2011

If you are at the UNFCCC intercessional in Bonn, please join Nerisha Baldevu 
to discuss and workshop civil society plans for COP17. We would like to invite 
international organisations to participate in planning, preparation and 
programming.

pour ses activités liées à la CdP 17. Nous aimerions vous inviter à la prochaine

Commune sud-africaine de la société civile des plans pour COP17: 
Invitation à participer à la planification, la préparation et de programmation 

À la lumière de l'Afrique du Sud sera l'hôte de la COP17 de la CCNUCC à Durban à 
la fin de 2011, l'Afrique du Sud de la société civile considère qu'il est 
impératif de faciliter la participation locale et internationale de la société 
civile dans les négociations, et élaborer et mettre en évidence des solutions 
indépendantes au changement climatique. 


COP17 est un événement important pour l'Afrique du Sud et la région. Il attire 
l'attention sur les impacts du changement climatique sur le continent, et 
prévoit une étape à mettre en évidence les solutions nécessaires, en termes de 
baisse des émissions mondiales et à renforcer la capacité des communautés 
pauvres et vulnérables à faire face aux impacts du changement climatique. 


Si le changement climatique doit être freinée de façon significative, les 
gouvernements doivent se mettre d'accord sur des objectifs forts de réduction 
des émissions à la source. Il est donc important que la société civile est en 
mesure de pression sur les gouvernements du monde à agir. 


Comité de la société civile pour COP17 (C17) 
Lors d'une réunion Janvier de plus de 80 sud-africains de l'environnement, 
social, communautaire syndicale foi, et les organisations de la justice 
climatique, le Comité de la société civile pour la COP17 (C17) a été créé et 
chargé de faciliter la participation de la société civile dans la période 
précédant et à COP17 . Ses tâches incluent la coordination de la Journée 
mondiale d'action, la coordination de la société civile autonome Space, appui à 
la mobilisation en Afrique du Sud, et en fournissant une plate-forme pour 
diffuser des événements COP17 de la société civile. Ces actions contribueront à 
un mouvement pour la justice climatique a considérablement renforcé. 


Journée mondiale d'action 
La Journée mondiale d'action (GDA) est un événement traditionnel et important à 
la CdP CCNUCC. L'objectif principal est une masse de mars communauté 
internationale et nationale, du travail, les jeunes, les organismes 
universitaires, religieux et de l'environnement et les militants à mettre en 
évidence la nécessité pour les leaders mondiaux pour résoudre les problèmes du 
changement climatique et la dégradation de l'environnement.

Espace autonome de la société civile 
A chaque COP groupes de la société civile organisent des événements 
indépendants, de partager des connaissances, élaborer des stratégies, tenir des 
conférences et établir des liens internationaux pour les campagnes et 
initiatives. Il ya une immense valeur à avoir une enceinte unique pour répondre 
à ces besoins. La société civile est l'espace compris de toute la société 
civile, et sera également ouvert au grand public. 

26 Novembre 10 Décembre 2011 to 

C17 ne cautionne ni ne limite les points de vue particuliers, événements, 
actions ou activités. Il est guidé par le changement climatique et des principes 
communs de justice climatique. 





L'espace de la société civile autonome prévue pour COP17 

Depuis sa création, C17 a élargi ses liens avec les organisations et réseaux qui 
ne faisaient pas partie de la planification initiale. Beaucoup d'efforts ont été 
consacrés à la liaison avec les organisations internationales et le renforcement 
des liens avec des organisations à travers l'Afrique. Lors des réunions en Inde, 
en Tanzanie, Copenhague, Bangkok et Dakar, les membres ont échangé des 
informations sur les plans et la participation C17 invités de la communauté 
internationale. 


Les intersessions première de la CCNUCC à Bangkok en avril 2011 a été important 
point de contact avec les mouvements internationaux de la justice climatique et 
la réunion en cours à Bonn sera l'occasion pour les C17 de présenter ses plans 
de travail et les inviter à participer à une manifestation officielle.
