Aaron, I totally agree that open standards/ protocols for sharing data
across servers is the way to go. This is what I was getting at in our
discussion on 'distributed database' on irc. One of our Aotearoa techs
is keen on the idea of using microformats as standards for data-sharing:
http://microformats.org/about/
I wonder what your views as a developer are on these standards:
RSS (widely used in Indymedia for syndicating newswire/ feature articles)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_(file_format)
OpenID (originally developed for LiveJournal but now more widely used:
http://openid.net/
As well as sharing events over group calendars on multiple servers,
what other kinds of data sharing can you see being useful for activist
networking? One thing that really annoys me about the existing data
silos is having to maintain a multitude of profiles, one for every
site I sign up to. I'd really like to have one profile that we either:
- push its changes out to my profiles on the other sites
- have the other sites pull my public info from my one profile
