i know some philosophies encourage "release early and release often" and others encourage documentation before the initial release.  there's no one way for open source development.  i know some of our indymedia techies have worked diligently on different open source projects that they kept under tight reins until they felt it was ready to release.  

and wiserearth is still in beta.
