I went to a talk last night by peak oil researcher Richard Heinberg.
Apparently there are signs that global oil production may have already
peaked (around 2005) and all the signs are pointing to a peak of all
mineral fuels around 2010. Heinberg is no anarchist but he pretty much
said that capitalism as we know it cannot survive oil depletion.
What this confirmed for me is that creating alternatives to corporate
globalization is not just a utopian sideline to the mainstream tasks
of keeping the existing society going. There is NO keeping the
existing society going and if working alternatives don't start kicking
in over the next few years, we are all in the deep doo-doo.
Someone once said there is nothing more powerful than an idea whose
time has come. I believe the time for the Solutions IMC has come. I'm
really looking forward to seeing a working site up and being used. So,
just to recap the process we were working on:
1) work on design for the site (name, logo, appearance, user navigation)
2) apply this to the Philly Drupal codebase (and or any other codebase
people have time to work on)
3) put up a 1.0 site
4) continue the discussion about what features we want to add to the
site to make it a space for networking and organising as well as news
reporting
What's everyone been up to on the alternatives front, oneline and off?
