This is Jay from West Philly. I'm sure we've met somewhere around
town, maybe many times. Also sorry to hear you're moving.
Anyway, we'll meet often on-line through this alternatives list. I'm
glad you're into the idea of working with us on a design! I don't
know how many Indymedia sites you've visited, but I'm excited about
the idea of working with someone who hasn't already designed IMC
sites and therefore can bring a completely different perspective to
the way the alternatives site can look and feel.
As for the tasks of a design coordinator, I'd say you should consider
yourself free to engage the project however you think would be most
productive and lead to your best work. We seem to have three or four
volunteers who are willing to particpate in the design team, each
with different skills and abilities, so you wouldn't have to be
alone, but right now we're in need of someone who will initiate
design ideas and let others know where there are gaps that need to be filled.
One question is, how do you like to work? Do you like to brainstorm
a lot of basic color schemes and hone in on a tone that feels right
before doing a full mock-up? Do you like to go all the way forward
with a mock-up and see what the group thinks as a whole? The few of
us who want to be involved in design but don't have the abilities or
time to bottom-line will be grateful for your initiative and skill.
Of course, first you should definitely get to know the project by
looking through our wikis and reading the e-mail archives. I'd
suggest browsing through some IMC sites to get a sense of what works
and what doesn't, but also to keep in mind your favorite non-IMC
sites, especially news and social networking sites. We want to build
a site that looks great and works well, not necessarily one that
will mimic IMC sites of days past. I'm sure a bunch of us would be
happy to talk with you on the phone too to help you get a sense of
the project and our vision for it.
As for time-frames, starting on this once you settle in mid-September
sounds just right. We've been moving forward slowly but
constantly. We're not in a frantic rush, but we're also chugging
ahead step by step. We're looking forward to your questions and
ideas spurring us on.
