Scrolling up the chat about themes in IRC:-

* For the layout - columns etc. you might want to be looking at Panels
rather than a theme. With it you can override the node pages as well as
index pages. You usually use it with Views. Making the lists of nodes
for your 'solutions wire' etc in views and placing them into Panels to
show next to each other on a page.
* For the theme if you just want to start just doing css - then look at
Zen it's the starter kit for CSS based theming (and the inline
documentation is now very good too).
