[Imc-alternatives] Integrating activist networking (was: any forward motion?)

At the risk of repeating the discussion we had last year, I think the magic
bullet that is missing here is inter-operability. I want to sign up once, to one
 activist networking system (be it an iteration of Crabgrass, Aaron's
ActivismNetwork, or something else integrated into my local Indymedia), and be
available to every other activist who has signed up on an activist networking
system - not just the same system I'm using.

I'm aware there are challenges to engineering, securing and maintaining a
distributed system, but as I say in my commentary, imagine you could only send
email to people on the same email host as you - would that really be a useful
networking infrastructure?

The stumbling block seems to be defining standards for information exchange
between different services, running on different software. What we need are
widely-supported open protocols (or microformats?). Where they don't already
exist, we need to bring groups of techs together to define them.
