Hi alternatives,

We NEED to decide on a final name for our site. For years we've been
able to putter along, calling the project "alternatives" but always
saying we would consider changing it when the time comes. Well, the
time has come. With the design process moving and backend stuff
being on the front burner again, we're actually planning to have a
public test site up within a few weeks. That means we need need need
to finally come to peace about the name of our site.

Several times in the past we've started along the road toward making
this decision and have put out a call for suggestions but haven't
finished the deal. I'm going to suggest we try to pin down a name by
May 30. I'm thinking of a three-step process:

1) Make all final brainstorm suggestions by next week...let's say, by
next Friday, May 16.
2) Hash out the pros and cons of certain names then vote for our
favorites, with each of us being able to vote for all the names we
like, by Friday, May 23, ending up with a top three.
3) Lobby for our favorite, vote among the top three and come out with
a winner by Friday, May 30.

Does that sound like reasonable? If so, we should start. I've
copied the below list of current name candidates from the openplans wiki:

alternatives.indymedia.org
anotherworld.indymedia.org
future.indymedia.org
tommorrow.indymedia.org
solutions.indymedia.org
abetterworld.indymedia.org
thrive.indymedia.org
diy.indymedia.org
social.indymedia.org
network.indymedia.org
collaborate.indymedia.org
detourn.indymedia.org
radical.indymedia.org
radicalsolutions.indymedia.org
global.indymedia.org
socialforge.indymedia.org (not on openplans but also suggested)

NOW IS THE TIME TO SUGGEST MORE.

I think those who have never communicated on the alternatives list
should be invited to comment but only those who have put some work
toward the project should be able to vote.

thoughts?
Jay
