Is anyone up for being part of some regular weekly or fortnightly irc
planning sessions? Last time we did this, it catalysed some major
progress on the alt-imc project, including finalizing the project
name, clarifying the newswire/ knowledgebase/ networking structure of
the site, and motivating some fantastic coding work, resulting in a
semi-functional beta site. I'm not studying this year, so other than a
10 day meditation course in mid-May (13-24), I'm going to be available
much of the time for the next few months to be part of an irc meet.
What times are others available?
These are interesting times by anyone's standards, with the global
financial meltdown knocking people's faith in the state-corporate
political/ financial system, and waking them up to the reality of
imminent fossil fuel peaks, and the challenges (to put it lightly) of
the major climate change that is now undeniable. There are a range of
groups starting to articulate a vision similar to ours, a vision of
growing synergy between independent groups working on different kinds
of alternative projects, from the permaculture and transition towns
networks, to the various peak oil research groups.
Here's an example from Richard Heinberg from the Post Carbon Institute:
"There are magazines devoted to various aspects of the 'alternatives'
movement, and there are organizations doing good work in these areas.
But what's lacking is a unified vision of both the challenges and
solutions that sees all of these fields as interrelated."

The Alternatives IMC is an idea whose time has come. I don't think
it's unrealistic to propose having a 1.0 site functional and active by
the end of the year. To quote Ali G, "let's make it happen" ;)
