Hi imc-alternatives,

A report from the May 30, 2009 imc-alternatives code sprint.

Josh and I sat on my roof in the hot sun and dug through the drupal
back end of our test site, "http://www.domain23.info". We figured
out a bunch of things.

1) We clarified the difference in Drupal-talk between nodes, views,
blocks and panels. correct me if I'm wrong, but basically:
-- node: any individual file, like a solutionswire post
-- view: a way to look at different nodes. you can choose to "view"
all the nodes with a particular search term in it, or by
chronological order, or almost any other
-- block: the placement of a certain information on a page. For
example, the indymedia cities list appears on a block in on the right
sidebar of the main page. We can move that block anywhere on the
page, so it could appear on the left sidebar, on the navigation bar,
on the bottom, etc.
-- panel: visual layout of information in a block.

2) We figured out that the SolutionsWire works, and that you can
promote SolutionsWire articles to the main feature area by changing
its status in the "node-queue"

3) We figured out the basic knowledge wire and network sections can
work too without too much tinkering

4) We added a "how to publish" link at the top of the right sidebar
on the front page

5) We decided that for Drupal vets the admin layout is okay, but for
the rest of us it's really confusing. There are too many
choices! For the purpose of making admin easier we'll create some
cheat pages that offer only the options we need.

6) We figured out how to tinker with article submission forms and the
profile form

7) We figured out how to create a page, like domain23.info/EditorialPolicy.

8) We decided that we're actually closer to being functional than we thought!

All in all it was incredibly productive.

At the tech IRC meeting last night Nick got the update and we decided
to propose the next code sprint for June 20. Josh, Z, anyone else,
can you be there?

Jay
