Hi Peter

thanks for the note and the thoughts and hopes. I am fine and so far although several archive members have had their houses burnt and most have fled Dili I have not heard of any wounded or killed, thank god. A couple are camping in the archive as a result...

For them and all those who remain things are stressfull and unstable in the capital Dili. Gangs on the streets burning and looting.

Things are calming down a little with the presence of Aus and NZ and other soldiers. There is much to work out and resolve in the wake of this madness and much to rebuild but I am hopeful it will be possible to avoid civil war which would be much worse than what we have seen so far and far harder to repair.

Thanks for the thought re money. There will be a great need for this to help rebuild homes and get the centre happening again if only to give people income and morale building work. The archive has an account at ANZ bank in Dili:
Arquivo Audiovisual Timor Leste Max Stahl ANZ Dili Acc 1011104128001
SWIFT: ANZBTLDI

Howvever there have been stories of high Bank charges and Bank transfer costs for foreing transfers. Maybe you could enquire what these may be? Perhaps there are now New Zealanders going to Timor since there is a company of soldiers here? Could they courier something? Money or tapes?

It is very nice of you to think of us at this time. So good for morale!

Projects I am afraid are more or less paralised for now....although the guys stuck in the archive continue doing some transcriptions!

Dear Max and Joao, rang all the phone numbers i had for Timor Leste and the only one that rang was Augusto formally of the archive. He was at Dili Airport acting as an Interpreter for Australian Peacekeepers. He informed me The Arte Moris and the archive still stands. How safe is it with peacekeepers on the ground for archive members to venture into the streets or if they are not present. How is it in the archive. How do you get water, food .Are archive employees sleeping thier. How are you coping
I would like to send some $us to the archive.By media images it dosent look like Western Union would be operating.Otherwise i will find some other way to send.
I have attached a still image of Celestina ,Francilino Tercia and Grandma Pierra from better times.
I still trying to track down the Pierra family. Is it possible for an an archve member to go thier to see if the Pierra family are at the John Bosco mission and if it safe the alley between the Arte Morris and the Futo hotel first Cactus on the left and left again to document this.i think thier still some tapes i sent in the archive.
